PU at the Belo Horizonte Social Forum

Proutist Universal organized a large presentation at the Social Forum for the State of Minas Gerais that took place in Belo Horizonte, Brazil from August 29-31, 2001. More than 3,000 participants came to the State Legislative Assembly building to attend symposiums, workshops, and cultural programs based on the theme, “Another World is Possible”.

Six whole-time workers, one local full time worker and 20 members representing Proutist Universal set up colorful stands just beside the Forum entrance with books. The Pu activists spoke to many interested people and distributed more than 1400 leaflets. A large 4-panel thought exhibition explaining about Prout was prepared and hung beside the tables, along with a 3-meter banner that read:
PROUT: The Alternative to Globo-colonialism! Economic Democracy with Cooperatives and Basic Necessities for All!

There were also banners about Neo-Humanism and 7 large colorful signs with Prout slogans.

Two 2-hour workshops were organized: “The Socio-economic Model of Prout, an Alternative to Global Capitalism” was attended by 35 participants, and more than 130 attended the workshop on “Ethics and Spiritual Values of Neo-Humanism” by Dada Amitavidyananda. Each day the activists organized “Collective Meditation for Activists” with kiirtan (spiritual song and dance) followed by a short lecture about meditation.

The Proutist representatives met individually and presented Prout books to key leaders, including João Pedro Stedile (Landless People’s Movement leader), and Economics Professors Marcos Arruda and Reinaldo Gonçalves.

On the last evening, the proutists joined a march through the city against corruption with nearly 1000 activists. Holding colorful banners and signs, they sang kiirtan as we marched.
